Literatuur-professor Rose is als docent briljant én grappig. Als zij college geeft, zit de zaal vol. Maar privé schiet het niet veel op: die geestigheid zit verpakt in een slonzig uiterlijk. Dus woont ze nog steeds bij moeder thuis, en heeft ze het huwelijksaltaar alleen gezien toen ze haar zus daarheen begeleidde (al 3 keer inmiddels). Haar mannelijke goodlooking collega Gregory daarentegen heeft hoogstens wat vrouwelijke studenten in de zaal, die meer voor hém dan voor zijn onoplosbare opgaven komen. Lelijke eend ontmoet zwaan. Maar Gregory houdt de liefde graag platonisch. Rose denkt dat haar uiterlijk de reden is, en pakt dat eindelijk eens rigoreus aan. Zodat ook haar zwager haar opeens ziet staan.
