1914. Jack Kipling, zoon van de beroemde auteur Rudyard Kipling, zou graag in het leger willen gaan om te vechten in de Eerste Wereldoorlog, tot grote ergernis van zijn zus Elsie. Heel de familie vreest het ergste wanneer ze te horen krijgen dat Jack meedoet in de slag bij Loos-en-Gohelle in Frankrijk.
