Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog bevindt Thailand zich in een economische crisis. Ajin Panjapan, een 22-jarige student, wordt van Bangkoks beste universiteit gestuurd en moet voor straf van zijn vader gaan werken in een tinmijn in Phang-Nga, een provincie in zuid-Thailand. Na vele belevenissen komt Panjapan gelouterd tevoorschijn en groeit uit tot een van de bekendste hedendaagse schrijvers van Thailand.
