Sinds de dood van zijn vader woont de 13-jarige George op de boerderij van zijn grootouders in Kansas. Hij mist zijn moeder, die na het ongeluk naar Minnesota is verhuisd, maar hoopt haar met Kerstmis terug te zien. George probeert zijn grootvader Bo te helpen waar hij kan en biedt troost aan zijn grootmoeder Cora. Ondertussen sluit hij vriendschap met Tucker, de slimme hond van Frank Thorne, die in de gevangenis is beland.
