Een seriemoordenaar zwerft door het land, en omdat de jonge, beleefde man eerder beschermende en liefdevolle instincten dan vluchtreflexen aanwakkert, halen sommige slachtoffers hun eigen doodsoorzaak in huis. Hetzelfde overkomt een ongelukkig getrouwd stel: hij vindt de jongeman leuk omdat hij de vreemdeling ziet als een vervanging voor zijn kind, dat jaren geleden verdween; zij verzet zich tegen hem, maar schikt zich in zijn aanwezigheid. Het leven lijkt weer normaal te worden voor de zwerver; de liefde bloeit op in de nieuwe middenklasse. Maar kan hij zijn moorddadige schaduw overwinnen?
