Harlem, 1928. Dixie, een cornetspeler, redt Schultz, een onderwereld baron, van een moordpoging. Ten tijde van een bendeoorlog tussen Schultz en de eigenaar van de jazzclub The Cotton Club gebruikt Dixie de bescherming van Schultz. Hij heeft genoeg van al het geweld en besluit zijn eigen weg te gaan richting Hollywood.
