Het leven is niet altijd gemakkelijk voor een jongen van twaalf die net zijn vader verloren heeft. Josh deelde alles met hem: zijn spelletjes, zijn vrije tijd en zijn passie voor het basketbal. Wanneer Josh op een dag aan het trainen is op een verlaten veld, ontdekt hij een uitgemergelde hond. Hij neemt het dier mee en helpt hem er weer bovenop. Tot zijn grote verbazing merkt Josh dat zijn nieuwe vriend, Buddy gedoopt, basket kan spelen. Zij beginnen samen te trainen.
