Chaterine Morland is een geestdriftige jonge schoonheid, een meisje van het platteland dat in het decadente stadje Bath kennismaakt met de high society. Haar domein en fantasieën over het romantische leven van de rijken worden al snel op de proef gesteld wanneer niet één maar twee geïnteresseerde mannen zich aandienen: de knappe en jaloerse John Thorpe en de aardige, oprechte Henry Tilney.
