Voor haar nichtje Fanny Knight, een jong, knap, romantisch meisje, is Jane het grote voorbeeld. Fanny denkt dat haar tante, die zulke prachtige romantische verhalen schrijft, zelf veel ervaring moet hebben. En dat zij veel van Jane kan leren. Fanny is vastbesloten de waarheid te achterhalen over de jeugdjaren van haar tante.
