De film volgt enkele generaties van de Joodse familie Sonnenschein in Hongarije, tegen de achtergrond van politieke beroering en oorlog. De familie werkt zich geleidelijk op tot een leven van welstand, maar elke generatie wordt geconfronteerd met de Joodse wortels van de familie en moet keuzes maken tussen de eigen identiteit en de maatschappelijke positie die wordt nagestreefd. Het grootste verlangen van de opeenvolgende stamhouders is om thuis te horen in hun eigen land.
