Het is 1864 in Amerika. De Burgeroorlog is nog steeds in volle gang. De 13-jarige Will (Ashton Sanders) en zijn cynische oom Marcus (Keston John) sporen in opdracht van een bende blanke premiejagers weggelopen slaven op. Ze worden naar het noorden gestuurd om een bevrijde slaaf (Tishuan Scott) die gezocht wordt voor moord terug voorbij de Zuidelijke linies te brengen.
