Gebaseerd op de roman van Charles Nordhoff die zich in 1790 afspeelt en vertelt over een schip met gevangenen met bestemming Australië. Deze film draait rond het conflict tussen de gevangene Hugh Tallant (Ladd) en de sadistische schipper Capt. Paul Gilbert (Mason), met Sally (Patricia Medina) als liefje van de gevangene.
