Hoe ver ga je in een wereld vol meedogenloze huichelarij en perverse moraal, om de enige van wie je houdt van de totale ondergang en vernedering te redden? Lily Bart, een mooie jonge vrouw uit de betere kringen ziet zichzelf langzaam afglijden naar sociale verachting en armoede. Ze moet zich staande houden tegen gehaaide opportunisten en moreel bankroet. Haar enige kans om te overleven is te ontkomen aan de verdorvenheid van haar milieu, dat ze veracht, maar ook zo nodig heeft. Om zichzelf te redden van de financiele ondergang moet ze de enige man waarvan ze ooit gehouden heeft verraden.
