Een liefdesgeschiedenis over een jongeman, Jack Flange, die de stad verlaat en werk vindt bij oesterkwekers in het gebied rond de Hawkesbury River. Jack treft een kleinsteedse mentaliteit aan, met zijn voordelen en zijn nadelen. Er heeft net een inbraak plaatsgevonden en daarbij is geld gestolen. Jack wordt verliefd op een ex-kamermeisje. Ondertussen maakt hij zich ook zorgen om zijn zus, die ziek is. Zijn nieuwe omgeving is een mijnenveld voor een jongen uit de stad. Is hij hier een passant of een blijver?
