De Verenigde Staten worden geteisterd door misdaad en overvolle gevangenissen, daarom besluit de overheid om een jaarlijkse ‘Purge’ van 12 uur in te stellen. Tussen 19.00 uur en 07.00 uur is elke misdaad, zelfs moord, legaal. De politie is niet te bereiken en ziekenhuizen sluiten hun deuren. Het is één keer per jaar waarop de burgers hun gang kunnen gaan zonder gestraft te worden.
