In heel Irak is het de dag dat scholen leerlingen selecteren die de eer krijgen om voorwerpen mee te brengen naar de verplichte lokale viering van de verjaardag van president Saddam Hoessein. De negenjarige Lamia woont in de historische moerassen met haar pittige oma Bibi. Voor school leert Bibi Lamia slimme trucjes om te voorkomen dat ze wordt uitgekozen voor de taart van de president. Maar wanneer Musa, de gezaghebbende leraar, Lamia's naam noemt voor de meest uitdagende opdracht - de verjaardagstaart - heeft ze geen andere keuze dan deze te accepteren. Weigeren kan gevangenisstraf of zelfs de dood betekenen.
