Enkele weken voor de zomervakantie trekt Tom Lawrence van Delaware naar Port Chester, gereputeerd om zijn stijlvolle High School. Hij komt er terecht op een campus waar eerder anarchie dan chaos heerst. Vooral de bende van James Andrews heeft lak aan het gezag van lector Garcia Thompson. Maar de vrijgevochten jonge vrouwen, net als een troep natuurminnende vegetariërs en de aanhangers van de Black-Power beweging, schijnen zich al evenmin veel van de universitaire discipline aan te trekken. Om toch wat vrienden te maken en tot de groep te behoren, helpt hij hen met de organisatie van een zeer belangrijke en hopelijk lucratieve fuif. Als de studentenvereniging niet snel een pak geld op tafel kan gooien, zullen de leden immers door de directrice van de universiteit op straat worden gezet.
