De wetenschapper Richard Keaton vindt in de jonge weduwe Elizabeth Guinness een geschikt kindermeisje voor zijn moeilijk opvoedbare zoontje. Richard denkt dat zijn broer Blaine de vader is van de jongen. Elizabeth zorgt ervoor dat Richard en zijn zoon nader tot elkaar komen, en intussen worden de volwassenen ook nog verliefd op elkaar. Tijdens een kampeertochtje wordt er echter op hen geschoten.
