Homer Hickam groeit op in de jaren '50 in het mijnwerkersdorp Coalwood. Hij heeft maar één toekomst in zicht: werken in de plaatselijke kolenmijn, net als zijn vader. Wanneer in oktober 1957 de eerste satelliet Sputnik de lucht in wordt geschoten verandert echter alles.
