Sarah Rector is een Afro-Amerikaans meisje geboren in het Oklahoma Indian Territory begin 1900. Ze gelooft dat er olie te vinden is onder het dorre land dat haar is toegewezen en haar geloof blijkt terecht. Terwijl hebzuchtige oliezoekers dichterbij komen, wendt Sarah zich tot haar familie, vrienden en een paar Texanen om de controle over haar olierijke land te behouden.
