Kittan Velusamy komt uit een sociaal onderdrukte kaste op het platteland van Tamil Nadu. Gedreven door een passie voor kabaddi, vecht Kittan tegen kastevooroordelen, gewelddadige vetes en weerstand van zijn familie – met name van zijn beschermende vader, Velusamy – terwijl hij ervan droomt India te vertegenwoordigen op de Aziatische Spelen van 1994. Tegen de tumultueuze achtergrond van het geweld op basis van kaste en de rivaliteit tussen districten, wordt Kittans pad geteisterd door tegenslagen die worden veroorzaakt door machtige landeigenaren zoals Kandasamy, wiens dominantie elk aspect van het dorpsleven kleurt.
