Aristocraat Guillaume de Saint Preux leidt een dubbelleven als een gemaskerde bandiet die bekend staat als de Zwarte Tulp. De Zwarte Tulp berooft alleen rijke aristocraten, dus de lokale boeren beschouwen hem als een held. Baron La Mouche is ervan overtuigd dat Guillaume de Tulp is. Tijdens een overval maakt hij littekens op het gezicht van de Tulp en hoopt hiermee Guillaume te ontmaskeren, maar Guillaume is hem een stap voor.
