Agnes White is een eenzame, gescheiden vrouw die nog steeds doodsbang is voor haar ex-echtgenoot Jerry Goss, die elk moment uit de gevangenis kan komen. Sinds kort ontvangt ze telefoontjes waarbij niemand spreekt en ze denkt meteen aan Jerry. In het ongure motel in Oklahoma waar ze woont, leert ze ondertussen via een vriendin de paranoïde, maar sympathieke Peter Evans kennen. Tussen hen bloeit voorzichtig iets moois op, tot hij op een bepaald moment een klein beestje lijkt te zien. Agnes wil hem graag geloven, maar het worden er steeds meer en meer…
