De heer Watts is de enige blanke man die overgebleven is op het eiland na de blokkade tijdens de burgeroorlog in Papoea Nieuw-Guinea. Hij opent een school en introduceert bij de kinderen het verhaal "Great Expectations" van Charles Dickens. Matilda, de tiener die het verhaal voordraagt, vindt troost in het verhaal van een Victoriaanse wees nu haar eigen wereld uiteen valt. De Redskins, een leger dat gestuurd is om de lokale rebellen te doden, komt steeds dichterbij. Matilda schrijft het woord 'Pip' in het zand. Deze simpele handeling leidt echter tot vreselijke gevolgen als de Redskins vermoeden dat Pip een rebellenleider is en ze eisen dat hij bij hen gebracht wordt.
Nee, helaas is Mr. Pip nog niet beschikbaar op Netflix in Nederland.
