Violet, Klaus en Sunny Baudelaire zijn drie intelligente kinderen die te horen krijgen dat hun ouders zijn omgekomen in een brand, en dat ze hen een enorm fortuin hebben achtergelaten die ze pas mogen hebben als het laatste kind oud genoeg is.
