Plot

In Chicago's beruchte wijk 'South Side' vecht Nellie Romano tegen haar afhankelijkheid van drugs en ze probeert te overleven in haar armoedige leven, sinds haar man werd geëxecuteerd voor de misdaden, die hij had begaan. Ook vecht Nellie voor haar zoon Nick, om te voorkomen dat hij evenals zijn vader een crimineel wordt. Nick wil aan zijn milieu ontsnappen, maar zelfs met de hulp van enkele vrienden, zal dat voor hem en ook voor zijn moeder een zeer taaie strijd betekenen.
