Polly en Tim Thompson verhuizen met hun kinderen Beth, Joe en Fran naar het platteland. In hun nieuwe thuis stuiten de kinderen op een magische boom waarin excentrieke en buitengewone wezens huizen. Het drietal wordt mee op sleeptouw genomen en komen in fantasierijke landschappen terecht. Op hun avontuur halen ze hun onderlinge familieband aan.
