Vada's stiefmoeder is zwanger en Vada gaat meer en meer nadenken over haar biologische moeder, die in het kraambed stierf. Als ze op school een opstel moet schrijven over een bewonderingswaardige persoon die je nooit ontmoet hebt, kiest ze niet voor haar favoriete dichter maar voor haar moeder. Ze gaat naar L.A. op zoek naar haar moeders geschiedenis en verblijft bij haar oom, wiens nieuwe vriendin een zoon heeft die haar helpt met haar onderzoek.
