In de jaren 70 is een pastoor met zijn gezin op weg om een nieuwe kerk te bouwen op het platteland van Michigan. Onderweg komen ze voor uitdagingen te staan die alles dreigen te ontrafelen. Wanneer een timmerman hun onwaarschijnlijke bron van hoop wordt, bewijst hij dat geloof in God de ware weg naar verlossing is, zelfs in de meest tragische omstandigheden.
