Baltimore, begin jaren 60. Tracy Turnblad (een rol van talkshow host Lake), een moddervet maar swingend meisje ziet haar droom uitkomen als zij door de auditie van de Corny Collins Show heen komt. Nu zij eenmaal in deze populaire dansshow zit wil zij ook haar zwarte vrienden er in krijgen, maar dit is vragen om problemen... Met bijrollen van Debbie Harry, Pia Zadora en Sonny Bono.
