Begin 19de eeuw. De beruchte Franse schrijver Markies de Sade is opgesloten in Charenton, een instelling voor krankzinnigen. Keizer Napoleon wil verhinderen dat de markies zijn aanstootgevende literatuur kan publiceren, maar die smokkelt zijn manuscripten naar buiten met de hulp van de jonge Madeleine LeClerc, een kamermeisje. Zodra de keizer ontdekt dat de markies nieuwe werken blijft uitgeven, schakelt hij de wrede dokter Royer-Collard in.
