De ouder wordende nieuwslezer Howard Beale van UBS wordt wegens tegenvallende kijkcijfers ontslagen. Hij reageert hierop door live op tv te verklaren on-air zelfmoord te zullen plegen. Hierdoor wordt Beale een grote tv-bekendheid, iets dat de met problemen kampende zender wel kan gebruiken.
