Na een vliegtuigramp overleefd te hebben is Max Klein niet langer de persoon die hij was. Hij is niet meer in staat om met z'n oude leventje verder te gaan, heeft problemen met z'n vrouw Laura, en voelt zich onkwetsbaar. Als psycholoog Bill Perlman niet in staat blijkt om Max te helpen, zorgt deze ervoor dat hij een andere overlevende ontmoet, Carla Rodrigo, die vol schuldgevoel zit nadat haar baby bij de crash is omgekomen.
