Om zijn planeet te redden moet het ruimtewezen Harold (Garry Shandling) naar de aarde om een vrouw te vinden bij wie hij een kind kan verwekken. Op de planeet heeft hij als beste het examen over het benaderen en omgaan met vrouwen afgelegd maar eenmaal op aarde komt hij erachter dat het handboek over de vrouw toch niet helemaal compleet was. Hij wordt achtervolgd door een buitenaardsleven-expert (John Goodman), in verwarring gebracht door zijn overspelige en oversekste collega (Greg Kinnear) en dan ontmoet hij ook nog eens de ware (Annette Bening)! Nee, even naar de aarde om je voort te planten is toch makkelijker gezegd dan gedaan...
