In Nieuw-Zeeland, 1981, is Josh Waaka een zeventienjarig buitenbeetje in het door rugby geobsedeerde St Gilbert's College. Ondertussen toert het rugbyteam van de Springboks, dat Zuid-Afrika uit het apartheidstijdperk vertegenwoordigt, door Nieuw-Zeeland, wat landelijke protesten ontketent en het land verdeelt. Josh's pas ontdekte passie voor acteren en een groter bewustzijn van zijn Māori-erfgoed storten hem halsoverkop in een conflict waar hij gedwongen wordt zich te conformeren of voor zichzelf, zijn familie en zijn toekomst op te komen.
