Thad is een succesvol schrijver, hij schrijft zijn serieuze werk onder zijn eigen naam en de populaire thrillerreeks onder het pseudoniem George Stark. Na chantage door een ontdekker van zijn geheim begraaft hij Stark symbolisch. Hierna worden moorden gepleegd, waar het bewijsmateriaal steeds in de richting van Thad wijst.
