Nadat ze Chicago had verlaten en haar verloving een paar maanden geleden had verbroken, keerde Sadie Walker, een voormalig vastgoedadvocaat, terug naar Brennington, haar geboorteplaats en doceert ze aan de universiteit. Een paar dagen voor Kerstmis hoort ze dat de Drive-in, een lokale instelling, niet zal heropenen. Degene die direct betrokken is bij de verkoop van het land is niemand minder dan Holden, haar voormalige middelbare schoolvriendje die ze al 20 jaar niet heeft gezien.
