Een tienerwees vecht aan het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog tegen het Rode Leger en wordt in de nasleep 'geadopteerd' door een commissaris. Jaren later wordt hij tijdens de Koude Oorlog naar Londen gestuurd om voor de KGB te werken, waar hij zijn leven in twijfel trekt.
