Sinds de tragische dood van haar zoontje heeft de veelgeprezen auteur Aggie Wiggs zich teruggetrokken uit het openbare leven, niet meer in staat om te schrijven, een schim van haar vroegere zelf. Maar ze vindt een onwaarschijnlijk onderwerp voor een nieuw boek wanneer het huis naast haar wordt gekocht door Nile Sheldon, een beroemde en formidabele vastgoedmagnaat die ooit de hoofdverdachte was in de verdwijning van zijn vrouw.
