Na de dood van haar moeder verhuist de kleine Alysia in de jaren 70 met haar vader Steve naar San Francisco. Hier ontwikkelt Steve zijn schrijftalent verder en begeeft hij zich in het homoseksuele datingwereldje. Zijn bohemien levensstijl komt geregeld in conflict met wat zijn omgeving van hem als ouder verwacht. Alysia groeit op als een zelfstandige jonge vrouw en haar band met haar vader wordt grondig op de proef gesteld.
