Frankie Addams is een jongensachtig 12-jarig meisje dat door de andere meisjes in de buurt wordt gepest en een vervelende fase in haar leven doormaakt. Het grootste gedeelte van haar tijd brengt ze in de keuken door waar ze praat met de zwarte dienstmeid Bernice en het jongere buurjongetje John Henry. Haar broer Jarvis staat op het punt te trouwen en Frankie beeldt zich in dat ze met hem en zijn nieuwe vrouw het stadje zal verlaten.
