De film verhaalt over een ogenschijnlijk gewone Japanse familie. De vader wordt plotseling ontslagen en verbergt dit voor zijn familie. De oudste zoon studeert en komt nog maar nauwelijks thuis. En de jongste zoon neemt heimelijk pianolessen, zonder zijn ouders in te lichten. De moeder tenslotte, die diep van binnen weet dat het haar taak is de familie bij elkaar te houden, kan de motivatie hier niet meer voor opbrengen.
Nee, helaas is Tôkyô Sonata nog niet beschikbaar op Netflix in Nederland.
