Whip Whitaker is een piloot die ternauwernood zijn passagiersvliegtuig veilig aan de grond weet te brengen als de apparatuur het begeeft. Hij wordt als held onthaald, maar na onderzoek blijkt dat hij onder invloed was van drugs en alcohol. Hij gaat door een diep dal, omdat hij vindt dat hij ten onrechte tot held is gebombardeerd.
