Met de acteercarrière van Francis McGowan gaat het steeds minder sinds de serie Anchors Aweigh eindigde. Hij besluit om zijn vrouw en twee kinderen een tijdje achter te laten en vertrekt naar zijn geboortedorp. Daar wil hij de persoonlijke spullen van zijn vader, die zes maanden geleden overleed, uitzoeken en het ouderlijk huis verkopen. Terwijl Francis probeert zijn opdringerige buurman Duane Hopwood te vermijden, ontmoet hij Lucy Bammer.
