De eenzame, doodgewone professor Paul Matthews wordt van de ene op de andere dag een beroemdheid wanneer hij plots verschijnt in de dromen van miljoenen mensen. Hoe en waarom dit gebeurt, is voor Paul een compleet raadsel, maar hij is er niet boos om. Studenten komen eindelijk naar zijn lessen, hij wordt gevraagd voor grote reclamedeals en de relatie met zijn vrouw is nog nooit zo goed geweest. Maar dan nemen de nachtelijke verschijningen een duistere wending en veranderen ze in gruwelijke nachtmerries.
