In het jaar 1947 ontmoet de moeder en serveerster Madeleine de rijke en intelligente student François. Er is meteen sprake van een grote aantrekkingskracht tussen hen. Beiden dragen een sluier van mysterie over zich. François poogt door middel van zijn nieuwe liefde iets in zijn leven te ontvluchten. Zelf is ook Madeleine bereid om iets achter te laten.
