De schrijfster Jane moet van haar man John verplicht een rustpauze inlassen. Haar zomer zal ze dusdanig doorbrengen op het platteland waar ze door de slaapkamer gefascineerd geraakt. Meer bepaald het gele behangpapier trekt Jane's aandacht. In haar afzondering schrijft ze over een vrouw die in het behang gevangenzit en het aan Jane overlaat om haar te bevrijden.
