De kleine Sammy Fabelman groeit op in Arizona in de jonge jaren na het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Reeds in zijn kindertijd heeft hij een grote passie gevonden in de cinema en maakt hij films met zijn vrienden. Hij voelt zich hierin gesteund door zijn moeder, een bedreven pianiste. Zijn vader is informaticus wiens collega Benny de rol van oom voor Sammy en zijn zussen op zich neemt. Deze familiedynamiek leidt uiteindelijk tot spanningen die doorsijpelen in de audiovisuele creaties van Sammy.
