Een sullige dorpspastoor wordt per ongeluk tot paus verkozen. Eenmaal in het Vaticaan ontdekt hij dat de hoogwaardigheidsbekleders van de kerk door en door corrupt zijn, en hij bindt de strijd met hen aan. Maar dan ontdekken zijn tegenstanders de Achilleshiel van de nieuwe paus.
