Wanneer aspirant-documentairemaker Donny Wunder op een onopgeloste moord stuit, wil hij de volgende grote documentaire over een waargebeurde misdaad maken. Maar als de verdachten en een tirannieke regisseur een ravage aanrichten op de set, brokkelt de productie op spectaculaire wijze af. Met als hoogtepunt Donny's arrestatie. Eén jaar later zitten Donny en de producenten samen voor interviews en kijken ze terug op het fiasco dat 'Killer Whales' was.
